Ambassador Stephen M. Young, consul general of the United States of America in Hong Kong, yesterday (20 March) gave a talk on “The Enduring US Commitment to Asia, and What it Means for Macau”, at the University of Macau (UM), as part of UM’s Distinguished Diplomatic & Consular Speakers Series for the year 2013.

The talk took place at UM’s Ho Yin Convention Centre. Prof. Iu Vai Pan, master of the East Asia College, introduced Ambassador Young. Prof Iu told the audience that Ambassador Young joined the US State Department in 1980 and assumed office as US consul general in Hong Kong in 2010, responsible for the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions. In his speech, Ambassador Young talked about the US government’s policy of re-balancing towards the Asia-Pacific region and pointed out the important role of Sino-US relations. He noted that the US government has always maintained good relations with the Macao SAR.

The Q&A session was moderated by Prof. Hao Yufan, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. After the speech, Ambassador Young met with Honours College students to share his experience on international relations.
