The University of Macau (UM) today (4 March 2013) kicked off the Career and Internship Fair 2013, which will last until 14 March. The fair attracted more than 65 companies and organisations offering over 1,300 job openings in over 20 fields to graduating UM students. A student who has accepted an offer from one of the Big Four accounting firms says that UM provides ample job information and opportunities through such activities and he believes that other UM students will soon find a job they like. Elvo, acting dean of students, notes that about 95 per cent of last year’s UM graduates have either found jobs or been accepted by graduate schools for further education, which is quite satisfactory and shows society’s confidence in the quality of UM graduates.

Exhibiting companies and organisations at this year’s Career and Internship Fair include many well-known international companies, like KPMG, Leighton Contractors (Asia) Ltd, Jardines, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, ESPRIT, etc. Graduating student of accounting Lei Wan Cheong says that PwC, one of the Big Four accounting firms, started its Macao recruiting in December 2012, and of the five people who stood out from several rounds of interviews and examinations and finally received the job offer, three were from UM, which he thinks shows that large international companies like PwC have confidence in UM graduates.

According to a survey conducted by the Future Studies and Placement among 2011/2012 graduating students, by the time the survey took place, 78 per cent of the respondents had already found jobs, with over 50 per cent having found jobs before graduation. The survey also shows that education, tourism, gaming, banking and finance sectors absorbed the most UM graduates. 16.4 per cent of last year’s UM graduates chose to pursue further education, up 5.4 per cent from the previous year. Elvo notes that UM organises a career fair every year to provide a platform for job-hunting students, and this year UM invited some companies and organisations to provide internship opportunities, in hopes of giving graduating students early exposure to the industry they are interested in and also a chance to use their strengths. Elvo adds that the fact that more than 95 per cent of last year’s UM graduates have either found jobs or accepted bygraduate schools for further education and that this year’s fair has attracted over 65 companies and organisations shows society’s confidence in the quality of UM graduates.

In addition to setting up booths to answer enquiries and distribute job application forms, exhibiting companies and organisations at this year’s Career and Internship Fair also conduct on-site job interviews with interested students. Besides the Career and Internship Fair, UM is also organising 38 career talks and eight training workshops to help graduating students to better understand the job market as well as to acquire the necessary job interview and application letter writing skills.
