The first batch of UM Reporters and the third batch of PR Student Ambassadors were inaugurated today (27 February). UM’s University Council Chair Tse Chi Wai, UM Rector Wei Zhao, as well as teachers and students from various faculties attended the inauguration ceremony.

Launched by the Communications Office, the UM Reporter Programme and the PR Student Ambassador (PRSA) Programme aim to provide a platform for students to show their talent and to know more about the university, to cultivate a sense of belonging, and to contribute to the university. This year 23 students were accepted as the first batch of UM Reporters. The PRSA Programme, in its third year now, has trained 120 Student Ambassadors. In his speech, Rector Wei Zhao stressed that UM belongs to the students, and the greatest meaning of the two programmes lies in that they make education become part of the students’ everyday life on the campus and they align with the “4-in-1” mode of education, thereby helping students to become outstanding, versatile, and multi-disciplinary graduates. Wei Zhao noted that university education shouldn’t be limited to the classroom; rather it should go beyond the classroom setting, involve every department and teacher, and be conducted in a multi-faceted manner, because every moment is a chance to educate.

At the inauguration ceremony, Rector Wei Zhao presented reporter passes to UM Reporters and encouraged them to think independently and be faithful to the truth. PR Student Ambassadors received name badges from Rector Wei Zhao and promised to do their best to assist with guest reception, guided campus tours and university-level events.

At the ceremony, a photo essay telling a typical day of a UM Reporter was presented. The third batch of PR Student Ambassadors gave a chorus rendition of the song “You Raise Me Up”, which ended in thunderous applause. During the song, senior PR Student Ambassadors passed on the “flame”, which was an electric candle, symbolizing responsibility and dedication, to the new PR Student Ambassadors. Dr Tse Chi Wai presented certificates to the Top Ten PR Student Ambassadors, in recognition of their good work during the past year.
