Prof Haydn Chen, vice rector (student affairs) of the University of Macau (UM), on 21 February gave a lecture on liberal arts education, to a full-house audience. This is the first of UM’s talk series on liberal arts education, and in his lecture, Prof Chen focused on the importance of helping students acquire soft skills in addition to hard skills. He noted that after the new campus is put into use, UM will have the largest residential colleges in Asia, which will enrich students’ campus life and facilitate education in soft skills. Towards the end of his speech, Prof Chen strongly advised the students to make lifelong learning a habit. Prof Chen is a world-renowned expert on materials science as well as an outstanding leading figure in higher education. During his term as the president of Tunghai University, he actively promoted liberal arts education. He founded a liberal arts college there to implement whole person education, which received a very positive response in Taiwan.
