The 31st Lecture of the University of Macau (UM) Distinguished Lecture Series, entitled “Big Data, Big Science, Big Industry—Genomics Leads to the Future”, will be held on 27 February. Dr Wang Jian, president of the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) and honorary chancellor of BGI College, will be the keynote speaker. He will discuss the role and importance of genetic analysis in society’s future development.

Dr Wang used to conduct research in the United States. His research areas included cellular differentiation and proliferation, gene cloning and protein expression. On returning to China, Dr Wang established the Beijing BGI-GBI Biotech Co., Ltd and was the broad chairman and president. In 1998, Dr Wang became the executive director of the Centre of Human Genome, Institute of Genetics, Chinese Academy of Science. From 2003 to 2007, he served as the vice director of the Beijing Institute of Genomics of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
