The fifth International Conference on the Legal Reforms of Macau in Global Context – Criminal Law and Protection of Fundamental Rights, organised by the Centre for Law Studies of the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Law (FLL), was held on 22 November and 23 November 2012, in the STDM Auditorium, UM Library. The conference dealt with a wide range of topics, including Fundamental Rights Protection on Criminal Matters, Recent Challenges on Criminal Matters, Fundamental Questions on Criminal Procedure Matters, and Special Criminal Law Questions. Approximately twenty scholars and experts from mainland China, Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique and Macao will attend the conference.

Attendees included scholars from Beijing Normal University, Taiwan University, National University of Kaohsiung, the University of Coimbra, the University of Lisbon, the University of Minho, Polytechnic Institute of Vizeu, the University of St. Paulo, the University of Eduardo Mondlane, and UM; as well as experts from the Supreme People’s Court of PRC, the Mozambique Legal and Judicial Training Centre, and the Macao SAR government.

President of the Macao Lawyers Association Mr. Jorge Neto Valente, UM Rector Wei Zhao, UM Vice Rector (Research) Prof. Rui Martins, FLL Dean Prof. Mo ShiJian, FLL Associate Dean Prof. Tong Io Cheang, Director of the Centre for Law Studies Prof. Manuel Trigo, and Director of the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies Prof. Wei Dan also attended the opening ceremony.
