A nine-people delegation from the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, led by Vice Minister of Science and Technology Cao Jianlin, visited the University of Macau (UM) on 25 September. Vice Minister Cao praised UM for using the state key laboratories and the four Chinese-speaking territories (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) as a platform to increase international collaboration, efficiency and impact. On 26 September, UM Rector Wei Zhao, Faculty of Science and Technology Dean Prof. Philip Chen and Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences Director Wang Yitao had a breakfast meeting with the delegation and further discussed the development of science and technology.

UM Rector Wei Zhao thanked the Ministry of Science and Technology for its encouragement and support. Vice Minister Cao praised UM for using the state key laboratories and the four Chinese-speaking territories (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) as a platform to increase international collaboration, efficiency and impact. Cao expressed his confidence that the collaboration between the four universities (Peking University, Taiwan University, the University of Hong Kong and UM) in establishing a joint research centre for Chinese innovative medicines will certainly help to raise research and academic levels. Cao was very pleased with the progress of the two state key laboratories within a relatively short period of time. He also offered three pieces of advice for the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, namely (1) clear identification of the labs’ orientation towards discipline-based academic studies, engineering application or industrial application, (2) expanding the research team by attracting talent, and (3) seizing the opportunity presented by the new UM campus to increase funding to develop the scientific research base.
