Dr. Yu Xiaoming has been appointed the University of Macau’s first dean of students

The University of Macau (UM) has appointed through international recruitment Dr. Yu Xiaoming as its first dean of students, in response to the increasing demand of student affairs with the university’s expansion.

“Student affairs must be strengthened in view of the university’s future development,” noted UM Rector Wei Zhao. “I believe that with the joint effort of Dr. Yu and all the other colleagues of the Student Affairs Office (SAO), we will be able to further improve work outcome, help the students reach their full potential, and take student affairs to a new level.”

Dr. Yu finished his undergraduate education in English Literature at Shanghai Normal University in China, and later went to the United Kingdom in 1977 for further studies. After receiving his master’s degree in linguistics from the University of Exeter in 1980, he went on to study at the University of Virginia in the United States, where he received his PhD degree in International and Comparative Education in 1991. From1996 onwards, he successively served as assistant dean of students and associate dean of students at the University of Virginia. In addition to rich experience in student affairs and international higher education practices, Dr. Yu also has over ten years of teaching experiences in mainland China and the U.S.

“UM is developing very fast, and after relocation to the new campus, it will fully implement a residential college system, which can be said to be a pioneering attempt in higher education in Asia,” said Dr. Yu. “But it will also bring a huge challenge to student affairs. After I take office, I will focus on training student affairs staff to improve the level of student management and quickly respond to students’ needs. In the meantime, I will enhance liaison with academic staff so we can work together to help students realize whole-person development.”
