UM team members and the model they made

University of Macau (UM) students recently won a second prize at the seventh Inter-University Invitational Civil Engineering Competition, held at Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College, Malaysia.

The competition attracted twelve teams from universities in Asia and Australia, including Monash University, Hanyang University, the National University of Singapore, the University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Tongji University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University, Universiti Tenagas Nasional (National Energy University) and Universiti Teknologi Petronas (Petroleum Technology University). Each contesting team was required to design a structure, write a report, fabricate a model, make a presentation and test the model. The model made by UM team aroused great interest from other contesting teams and judges, and finally took home a second prize for its extraordinary design, exquisite workmanship, lightness, strength and stiffness. 

The Inter-University Invitational Civil Engineering Competition is a biennial event launched in 2000. It aims to provide a platform for students of civil engineering from different cultural backgrounds to meet, interact and learn from each other, as well as use creativity and strengthen teamwork skills. The first and third competitions were hosted by Tsinghua University and UM respectively. The next competition will be held in 2014 at Monash University, Australia.

The UM team was led by Prof. Iu Vai Pan and Prof. Er Guokang. Winning students are Kang Yu, Ko Ka Lee and Ma Kam Pio from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology. The first prize went to Shanghai Tongji University. The other second prize went to Tsinghua University, Beijing. Kang, Ko and Ma said the competition enhanced their understanding of other contesting teams and broadened their horizons.
