In an attempt to give students a taste of the benefits of living in residential colleges and also to prepare them for the residential college system to be implemented on the new campus, the University of Macau (UM) has launched on a trial basis two residential colleges on the current campus. They are the Pearl Jubilee College (PJC) and the East Asia College (EAC). Top management, head of the two colleges, professors, and students are all very excited about this pilot residential college programme. Vice Rector Prof. Simon Ho notes that residential colleges offer an effective way to realize whole-person education. Head of EAC Prof. Iu Vai Pan points out that one of the good things about living in a residential college is that it can help students achieve their full potential through various activities and interaction with teachers and fellow students. Head of PJC Prof. George Watt remarks that the two pilot residential colleges can help UM accumulate experience for the successful implementation of the system on the new campus. Students have reported having gained a great deal from living in the residential colleges, with some citing their face-to-face interaction with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao earlier this year. There will be approximately ten residential colleges on the new campus.
