ContentThrough a cross-cultural comparison lens, this study examines similarities and differences on the pragmatic competence of using refusals between native speakers of Chinese (L1) and Chinese language learners (L2). Data collected from a discourse completion test answers questions of what kind of politeness strategies were employed, if there was a preference for particular strategies by L1 and L2, if there is a preference of usage frequency for a particular strategy by L1 and L2, and finally, what factors might determine the preferences.
