"A city without prospects will be dissolved into a disordered and unsystematic urban landscape, where the division of land owned by wealthy corporations has become an ancient practice of authority display,"-Jane Lee
"Suspended City Vision - Under the Lighthouse Multimedia Exhibition" organized by the Old Ladies House Art Space, was held at Oxwarehouse on April 14 to May 29. With a broad coverage of various media including photos, paintings, videos and music pieces, the exhibition displayed works of more than 10 local artists, students and residents, illustrating their reflections on the vicissitudes of the city. It is mainly intended to show how the authors see this small town, and hence draws more citizens' attention on the future urban planning, as well as the numerous tests on the Cultural Heritage protection.
"Space is the declaration of core authority," the curator Jane Lee said. "The shoreline of Macau symbolizes the arrival of an era when the city is partitioned by various powers. The city is growing, yet revolving around the center of economic interests and authoritative powers - Breaking away from the 'citizen's city', where citizens are now surrounded by 'privatization' and 'corporate culture'."
One of the local artists, Gigi Lei, expressed that Macau's uniqueness and humanity have been sacrificed for an economic expansion and government interest.
The exhibition explicitly reflected the imbalance between the Cultural Heritage conservation and city planning as a result of the booming growth of the city. The exhibition focused on the issue of protecting the view of Guia Lighthouse. Each exhibition work contained its own interpretation to express how the ideal future appearance of Macau would look like.
Some of the participants were trying to unearth the cultural connotation embodied in Macau's World Heritages in order to reveal the meaning of Macau's success in being granted the World Heritage status. Some authors combined the newly built casinos with the Word Heritage sites so as to create a strong sense of contrast in Macau's city appearance. Using a video to show the interviews with the young people who participated in the protection of the Guia Lighthouse, some authors intended to reveal the feelings and attitudes of those young people towards the future of their home town; meanwhile, all the authors hoped to call for more attention from local citizens on various problems caused by the rampant urban development.
