The Hoi King Garden Subway's project gets into the final stage. It opened to the public for a trial period in the morning of March 15.

The Macau SAR government believes that this subway can reduce traffic accidents while making it safer and easier for pedestrians and tourists to cross the street.

This subway is built in Avenida da Amizade at the Xin Kou An area. It is a busy and dense road near the Lotus Square. There are many commercial buildings and sightseeing places in the area; such as: Sands Casino, The Oriental Hotel, New Yaohan and Macau World Trade Center Building...etc.

It is an arch design subway and the entrance is made of plexiglass. The height of the subway is 3 meters and the width is 3.2 meters. This subway includes both a handrail escalator and walking steps.

Many traffic accidents happened in Macau because people do not pay proper attention to cars when crossing the road. According to the Statistics and Census Service, there were 8827 cases of accidents from January to August in 2005, especially since there are many new casinos and structures being built in Macau in recent years. More tourists are attracted to come to the city. Due to different cultures, some tourists do not often observe the traffic rules and cross the road dangerously.

Fatima Leong is an office worker in one of the office buildings near this new subway. She said, "Many people cross the road dangerously while coming to their office. This is a normal phenomenon in this busy road. So I believe that this new subway can improve this situation, it can also reduce traffic accidents."

Sarah Cheang is a Year 1 student in the University of Macau. She is also a part time staff in the World Trade Center Building. "I don't think that it is necessary to use this subway, as at the beginning of this year, another subway near the Lotus Square had already opened to the public. But I want to try to use this new subway because I feel so curious about the arch design of the subway," she added.
