The New Silver Jubilee Building

"I am going to be late for class! I have been waiting here for five minutes." This is a common sentence heard from students who are waiting for the elevator at 13:55 in the Silver Jubilee Building (SJB).

Since the second semester started, many students are having their classes at the new building - SJB. Each student usually has at least two-four classes in SJB every week. "It is more convenient to have a class at SJB rather than at the Library or at the Temporary Classroom Building (TP)," said Vincent Sin, a Year 2 student majoring in Marketing.

Most students appreciate the new SJB building. However according to Helena Francisca Lao, a third year student majoring in English Studies (ELL) said that the elevator in SJB always makes her late to class because of the fact that many students are having classes at SJB all within the same class time period. On the other hand, "There is no food service provided. If I want to get some food to eat, I have to walk all the way back to the library or to the Tai Fung Building," said Sin.

"I think the University should build one more elevator with faster speed in order to transport students and to save their time in waiting for the elevator between class breaks," he added. He also suggested that some food services should be provided in SJB so that students can get some food or snack in between classes. In addition, Andy Wong, a Year 2 student from the Faculty of Business commented that there should be some computers and a printing service provided to students. "I always have to run back to the Tai Fung Building for printing my assignments and the computer rooms there are always full, it is very inconvenient," said Wong.

According to the Real Estate Office of University of Macau (UM), SJB was completed in November last year. It is a nine storey building with three entrances of staircases, one in the middle and one at the each end of the building. It houses 60 classrooms, which is of help in alleviating the classroom shortage in UM.
