Free PE course welcomed
By Leo Wu

The University of Macau (UM) started to offer Physical Education (PE) this semester after three years of preparation. The PE courses include basketball, volleyball, rock-climbing, badminton, tennis and ping pong.

The rock-climbing club is recruiting new members.
Walter Ho, assistant professor of the Faculty of Education and his student assistant Alex Ai originated those courses. Ai said, "The courses are free electives. They are very much welcomed by students; the quota was full in the first afternoon of the course enrollment, and we have a total of 180 quotas, 30 for each course. But it seems they are not enough."

The big surprise is that girls are more active than boys to join the courses; the gender ratio for the courses is about 6 to 4. Fanny Lian, a Year 2 FBA student who takes ping pong said that keeping healthy was important. "Especially for girls, exercises not only can be good for our health, but also can help keeping our figure," she added.

Tina Sheng, a Year 3 FSH student who takes the volleyball session said, "I came from mainland China; I was very amazed when I heard that there was no PE course here. In the Chinese mainland, each university has PE that is a necessary part in university lives. And I am very glad we have it now, it means our university starts to understand that sports and physical education are very important for a comprehensive and international university. College students need to know how to keep their health and sports are very good for youths, especially for me."

But for Rich Li, a Year 4 FBA student said that sports lessons were easy ways to enhance the GPA. "But the credit for a sports course is only one, it's too low. Two or three will be better for me," he added.

There are six lessons per week, each lasts for two hours. Ai said, "We know that a two-hour lesson a week is not enough for professional training, but our objective is to let students get some knowledge about the game, teach them basic skills and how to play and have fun. Let them know how to do exercise to keep fit. And of course the lessons are free, so we hope everyone can enjoy the new course."
