SU President: Election promotion "too sensitive"

Sherry Lam, President of the Students' Union of UMac (SU) says the SU originally had the intention to organize some promotional activities for the election on campus, but was unable to do so due to a lack of time and preparation.

During the election period, there was no sight of promotional activities on the UMac campus. In addition to the lack of time and preparation, she also says that it is quite "sensitive" to handle the promotional issues because, on one hand, it is difficult to manage and allow candidates of all the groups to have their promotional activities in UMac. On the other hand, it would be unfair if only one or two groups are allowed to promote themselves in UMac.

When asked to comment about the limited knowledge of UMac students on current events, Lam admits that it is not common for Macao students to discuss politics and there is not enough education about government policies and the political structure of Macao.

She suggests that secondary schools should start to provide this kind of education so that students will have basic political knowledge in their teens and develop it into active participation when they receive tertiary education.
