BELINDA CHAN
Dr
Xu Feng Ying was born in Shanghai. She chose English Literature as her major
because the authorities offered this chance to her during the Chinese Cultural
Revolution.
She chose to teach in Macau because it is convenient for her to visit her hometown- Shanghai. In addition, she would like to keep in touch with society because her son has grown up.
"UM students are a self-discipline and they respect their teachers, unlike in America. Some of the students are crazy in their behavior and dress," Dr. Xu said while holding her head.
"Compared with UM students, foreign students are much more open-minded, creative and independent. They regard lecturers as their guide, not as teachers according to my opinion," she smiled.
Before coming to Macau, Dr. Schaetzel worked at the Asia Foundation as an education consultant, to help staff design educational programs in Bangladesh (near India). She had lived in Bangladesh for three and a half years because her husband was working there then.
Dr.
Schaetzel came from Boston and she enjoys teaching writing skills to students
because these skills are important for them to get jobs.
Meanwhile, she enjoys the process of teaching students. "Some of my students were immigrants who came from foreign countries. They could only learn a little bit English at the beginning. They had a great deal of improvement in English and at last, some of them became teachers. This is a good reward for me," she smiled.
Dr. Schaetzel feels that Asian people are friendly and helpful, so this is one of the reasons she chose UM. Moreover, English is widely taught in Asia and it was easy for her to get a job. Besides, her friend recommended her for the post.
After
graduation, Dr. Keith Edward Pharis traveled some places. "At that time I was
young, I wanted to get more life experience,' he said while crossing his hands
in front of his chest.
One of the places he has traveled to is Mexico. At that time, he was a fisherman. "I wanted to live in simple ways and try new things," he smiled.
One of the unforgettable things for him was to meet a shark in Mexico. Luckily he didn't move his body until the shark left.
Dr. Pharis, coming from Ohio, has 40 years teaching experience, and he enjoys teaching very much. He thought that the students' levels in his classes are quite the same as the level of other foreign students. "Many of the students' English skills are quite advanced. I had to work hard to give more difficult work to them," he laughed.
