A Longitudinal Study on the Effects of Preschool Program Quality on Children’s Learning and Development Outcomes

This project uses a longitudinal approach to investigate the effects of preschool program quality on children's learning and development outcomes within a three-year timeframe. Situated in Guangdong Province and Macao, a total of 80 preschools will be randomly selected to participate in the study. Within each sampled school, one classroom for 3-year-olds will be selected for inclusion in the study. The quality of preschool program will be rated by using the Chinese Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (CECERS) and the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS). Children's language, cognitive, motor, and social and emotional developments respectively will be assessed by using appropriate instruments. Parental background and involvement will also be assessed. These assessments will be conducted annually until these children have completed three years of preschool education. Latent growth modeling analyses will be applied to examine the effects of preschool program quality on children's learning and development outcomes. In addition, growth mixture modeling (GMM) will be used to identify potentially different developmental subgroups. Finally, interviews involving different stakeholders (parents, teachers, and policy makers) will be conducted to examine their perspectives on the major dimensions of preschool program quality, and on the assessment of these major dimensions.
