The only 1 public comprehensive university in Macao

 

On a 1.09-square-kilometre campus, UM offers over 130 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programmes through its Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, and Honours College. English is the main medium of instruction, with some programmes taught in Chinese, Portuguese, and Japanese.

 

2 state key labs

 

Currently there are two state key laboratories at UM, namely the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, and the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine. These two labs help to promote collaboration between UM and other universities in Macao, Guangdong province, and China, as well as the development of high-tech and innovative industries in Macao and China. 

 

 ‘3+2’ and ‘4+X’ programmes

 

UM has launched a ‘3+2’ programme and a ‘4+X’ programme, which provide students with the opportunity to study at world-renowned universities after completing a certain number of years of studies at UM. Participants in the ‘3+2’ programme will receive a bachelor’s degree from UM and a master’s degree from an overseas university upon completion of the programme. The ‘4+X’ programme reserves admission quotas at top universities.

 

 ‘4-in-1’ education model

 

UM implements a ‘4-in-1’ education model that consists of discipline-specific education, general education, research and internship education, and community and peer education, in an attempt to exert a positive influence on the students’ academic growth and character development.

The university hopes that by studying in an excellent learning environment with first-rate professors, students will be able to acquire extensive knowledge and develop positive character traits. 

 

An international faculty team of over 590 people

 

UM internationally recruits faculty members to create a multicultural and multilingual learning environment for its students. The university now boasts an international faculty team comprised of more than 590 people. Over 20 of them hold the title of ‘chair professor’ or ‘distinguished professor’ and are leaders in their respective areas of expertise. Many faculty members hold a PhD degree from renowned universities.

 

Over 60 universities for exchange programmes

 

UM has established partnerships with more than 60 universities in the world for exchange programmes. This provides students with the opportunity to meet friends from around the world, broaden their horizons, and experience different cultures and ways of life.

 

7 faculties

Currently there are seven faculties at UM: Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Faculty of Science and Technology. These seven faculties offer quality programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. There are also two institutes, namely Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, and Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, which offer postgraduate programmes in Chinese medical sciences and physics, respectively.

 

Over 80 buildings

Environment plays an important role in educating people. A good environment helps students achieve well-rounded development. There are over 80 buildings on the campus that serve different purposes, including teaching buildings, research buildings, Student Activity Centre, and residential colleges. UM also attaches great importance to physical education and encourages staff and students to take advantage of the various sports facilities to exercise regularly. The sports facilities on campus include an Olympic-size swimming pool, a football field, an athletic field, a tennis court, rock climbing walls, an archery range, badminton hall, a basketball court, squash courts, and a gym.

 

Further studies and employment rate reaching 90 per cent

 

UM graduates are doing quite well in employment and further studies. Many students found a job before graduation in June. 90 per cent of the graduates found a job within three months of graduation. Many graduates were accepted by world-renowned universities, such as Cambridge University, Columbia University, Cornell University, and the University of Pennsylvania, for graduate studies.

 

10 residential colleges

 

Residential colleges allow students of different countries, ages, and majors to live and grow together. The residential college system and the academic faculty system complement each other and combine to help students develop multiple abilities and expand their social network.
